Koala Feast

Koala Feast

Material
Tracey took this source photo while giving a German backpacker his dream of seeing koalas. She was pretty impressed as Tracey is not known for her photography skills! She was delighted with the wonderful profile of the koala emerging from the leaves.

The koala theme was chosen for a series of workshops in the Widows Art Community (founded by Tracey) and she knew exactly which photo she wanted to paint. It was created over 3 workshops in pointillism (all dots, no brush strokes). Most of it was created using Tracey’s usual soft pointed brush. However, she used a bristle brush to get the soft, furry look of the koala.

Others were obviously impressed with this work as it won 1st prize in the Traditional class at the local Gloucester Show. Very exciting.

The painting depicts a koala surrounded by lush green foliage and showcases their beauty and uniqueness. The pointillism technique used by Tracey gives the painting a unique texture and depth. The bristle brush technique used by Tracey to create the furry texture of the koala’s fur adds a tactile quality to the painting, making it feel more lifelike and three dimensional.

The koala is considered a national treasure in Australia but their population has unfortunately been decimated by disease and fire. Let’s hope they are not just a memory in the years to come. Their environment needs to be protected.
